Texas Board Eligibility and Requirements

The Texas Behavioral Health Executive Counsel: Texas State Board of Social Work Examiner requires the following:

  • LMSW’s meet with their supervisor for 100 total hours in no less than 24 months and no longer than 48 months.
  • During this time, you must be employed and work at least 30 hours per week to be eligible to complete the supervision process in, or close to, 24 months (typically 4 supervision hours per month, with as-needed individual sessions).
  • If you work part-time, you need to be working at least 15 hours per week to complete supervision within 48 months. Part-time employees will need one hour of supervision per 40 work hours (usually 2-3 supervision hours per month). 3000 total work hours are required before you can apply to sit for the licensing exam.

Employment Requirements

Due to recent changes, the board has determined that supervisors will regulate if the LMSW’s current employment setting qualifies for “professional clinical experience.” It is best if your employment setting allows you to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health using the DSM-V criteria. If you meet this qualification, then you are eligible to participate in LCSW supervision. If you do not meet this requirement, then you would need to have a supplemental plan. Supplemental plans include working a minimum of 4 hours per week in a clinical setting where you can assess, diagnose, and treat clients.

This is an area where I get the most questions and concerns.  We can talk more about your individual situation when you call.
