What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a gentle, evidence-based therapy that helps people heal from painful or traumatic experiences.

In an EMDR session, we start by talking through what you’d like to focus on and making sure you feel grounded and supported. I’ll guide you to briefly bring up a memory or feeling while using bilateral stimulation—such as moving your eyes back and forth, tapping your body with your hands, or listening to alternating sounds. This process helps your brain reprocess the memory in a new way, so it feels less distressing and more manageable. We move at your pace, checking in often to be sure you feel safe and in control throughout the session.

Often people appreciate that this process does not require retelling every detail of a trauma, making it feel less overwhelming.  Over time, EMDR can shift the way past events affect your present, helping you feel more balanced and at ease.

Is EMDR effective online?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is a well-established, evidence-based treatment for trauma and related conditions. Recent studies show that EMDR delivered via telehealth can be highly effective, offering significant reductions in symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression while maintaining the same structured, eight-phase protocol used in person.

Telehealth EMDR increases accessibility and flexibility, allowing clients to engage in treatment from home while still receiving guided bilateral stimulation and therapeutic support. Research indicates that online EMDR produces clinically meaningful outcomes across adults and youth populations, though larger randomized controlled trials are still needed to strengthen the evidence base.

In short, telehealth EMDR is a viable and effective option for many individuals seeking trauma therapy, particularly when in-person care is limited by distance, mobility, or scheduling barriers.
